As Lindsay Lohan heads to jail, a look at the worst prisons in the world

Lindsay Lohan is scheduled to start her 90 day sentence today for violating her probation.  For those of you who have been in a cave, click here for more on this story.

Lohan will be serving out her sentence at Lynwood jail, the same facility where Paris Hilton has spent time. While she’ll have her own bathroom, there is no smoking and cell phones and internet are not allowed.

While her time in jail won’t be fun, it certainly could be worse.  Here’s a look at five of the WORST prisons in the world:

5. ADX Florence (Colorado, USA) – aka ‘Supermax’ – Some of the most dangerous prisoners in the US are held here.  Amenities in each cell include a bed, shower, sink, toilet and TV.  The bad news is that if you’re here, you’re probably never going to leave.

4. Lurigancho Prison (Peru) – The prison where Joran van der Sloot would serve his time.  “Fifty percent of the inmates have AIDS or tuberculosis, and you can die from eating the food.”

3. Imrali Prison (Turkey) With depictions like that from ‘Midnight Express,’ Turkish prisons have an awful reputation. Imrali prison has been noted as having harsh conditions, but conditions may be improving. Some say Diyarbakir Prison is the worst, but it is now closed.

2. Any prison in China or North Korea.  While an inmate died playing “hide & seek” in one Chinese prison, it is hard to imagine things would be any better in a North Korean facility.

1. Most lists out there have Carandiru Prison in Brazil as their number one.  However, it was demolished in 2002. So let’s just enjoy a picture of the beach for now:

  1. It appears that Joran is getting exactly what he deserves, possibly a fate worse than death.
